Celebrating International Credit Union Day: The Singing River Story

On Thursday, October 15, 2026, credit unions around the world will celebrate the 78th anniversary of International Credit Union Day. Observed on the third Thursday of October since 1948, this day honors the history of the credit union movement, celebrates its achievements, and shines a light on the people who make it work: members. At Singing River Federal Credit Union, we are proud to be part of a global movement built on a simple idea. When people pool their resources and look out for one another, everyone does better.

Our own story began in 1953, when employees of International Paper's Southern Craft Mill in Moss Point organized a fair-rate financial cooperative to serve their coworkers and families. What started as a small group of mill workers helping each other has grown into a trusted financial partner for more than 28,000 members, with approximately $400 million in assets. Through all of that growth, we have held onto the values those founders started with. As a not-for-profit credit union, our focus is on lower loan rates, fewer fees, and decisions made with people in mind, not shareholders.

That same cooperative spirit is carrying us to new places. In 2025, MUNA Federal Credit Union joined the Singing River family, expanding our reach into Meridian and giving East Mississippi residents access to the same member-first service our South Mississippi members have trusted for more than seven decades.
